김은경은 아프리카 국가들의 정당체제, 선거전략, 정치경제적 균열에 관한 비교정치적 관점을 바탕으로 다수의 학술 논문을 국내외 저널에 발표해 왔으며, 이러한 연구를 토대로 국제정치와의 연계 가능성도 꾸준히 모색하고 있다. 이를 통해 민주주의 제도화와 해외원조 간의 상호작용, AfCFTA와 같은 지역 경제 통합의 정치적 맥락, 정치적 불안정성과 역내 안보협력 등의 주제를 심층적으로 연구하고 있다.
